They walked about the Grenouillère establishment with mincing steps like queens; and seemed to glory in their fame, rejoicing in the gaze that was fixed on them, so superior to this crowd, to this mob, to these plebeians. Madeleine and her lover watched them approach, and the girl’s eyes lit up.
As they do every Sunday, Paul and his mistress Madeleine, with whom he is madly in love, take a boat trip on the Seine. But their romantic rendez- vous is thwarted by another boat whose arrival is greeted by the crowd: a group of lesbians that Madeleine knows well, to Paul’s surprise. Jealous and contemptuous, he tries to dissuade his mistress from joining them. Guy de Maupassant here deals with love between women, a rare theme for the time, and features male and female characters prey to their emotions.
