The inspiration for this fantastical medieval tale came to Flaubert in 1876 from a stained-glass window in Rouen Cathedral. While hunting in the forest, Julien is told by a stag that he is fated to kill his parents. Frightened, he leaves the family castle to escape the dire omen. He then enters a life of wandering and adventure, but he cannot escape the prophecy…
